The array of different beers available in Britain means pleasurable research is required to find the best on offer. Learn more about some of the excellent beers available

British beers are renowned for their variety of taste, aroma and strength. From independent breweries to national companies, the options available to the beer connoisseur are manifold and enticing. Navigating such a plethora of alternatives can be difficult for even the seasoned drinker but here are examples of some of the more respected and renowned British beers on offer.

Fuller’s ESB Strong Bitter

ABV (Alcohol By Volume) – 5.9%

Based in Chiswick West London near the River Thames, Fullers has been brewing beers since 1845. Its ESB has a rusty orange colour to the eye with a distinctive bitter fruit flavour. Smooth with sweet, nutty malt overtones and a balanced clean finish.

Marston’s Pedigree Premium Ale

ABV - 4.5%

Made with natural Burton spring water and traditional varieties of barley and hops, Marstons’s Pedigree is still brewed in the traditional oak casks of the Burtons Unions. A rich and creamy golden brown in colour, it has the aroma of barley with a fruity dryness to the taste.

Taylor’s Landlord Strong Pale Ale

ABV – 4.3%

An independent family brewery situated in West Yorkshire since 1863, Taylor’s Pale Ale is amber through gold in appearance with a dominant apple and floral aroma. Complex and refreshing to taste, its bitter overtones with a malt edge add a pleasant sustaining aftertaste.

Wychwood Hobgoblin Ale

ABV – 4.5%

The Wychwood brewery is situated in Witney in the South of England. Deep red in appearance the Wychwood Hobgoblin enjoys a predominance of roasted malt. Its flavour is chocolate toffee with moderate bitterness and is characterised by overtones of fruit with a light, sweet aroma.

Harvey’s Sussex Best Bitter

ABV – 4.0%

Brewed in East Sussex, in the South-East of England from its own spring water and yeast strain, Harvey’s Best Bitter is full with a reddish amber colour and fruity, hoppy aroma. Smooth and dry, a hop feel is registered as an aftertaste making an easy and comforting beer to drink.

Rutland Panther Dark Mild Ale

ABV – 3.5%

Brewed in Oakham in the English Midlands, the Rutland Panther is a mild, low strength beer. Very dark brown in appearance and distinctive in aroma with herbs, roasted malts and grassy hops all apparent, it provides a perfect example of a high quality, low strength beer.
