Seattle is known as a real ale paradise, but many of the brewpubs listed in directories are a little out of the city centre. The traveller who hasn’t arrived by car, however, need not miss out on quality real ale.
Elysian FieldsThis is an Elysian Brewery pub (tel: 206 382 4498), at 542 1st Avenue South, approximately ten to fifteen minutes away from Pioneer Square. The rear of the pub is in sight of Qwestfield, home of the Seattle Seahawks and a concert venue.
The Elysian Fields is a large, cavernous pub which is a little lacking in atmosphere. The menu contains the usual brewpub choices, such as burgers and sandwiches, and also includes fish and pasta selections. A beer sampler selection is available to allow the beer fan to try all of the brews on offer.
Recommended beer: IPA
Continue along 1st Avenue South (away from Pioneer Square) and within another five minutes the Pyramid Alehouse at number 1201 will be reached. It stands directly opposite Safeco Field, baseball ground of the Seattle Mariners.
This is another large bar, but this location has more the feel of a pub used by regulars. It includes a shop area selling Mariners merchandise. The menu is the usual array of burgers and pizzas but the food is filling and tasty. A beer sampler selection is available. Tel: 206 682 3377
If you’re planning to go to the Pyramid, it is recommended that you make this an early trip as the bar does not stay open particularly late into the evening.
This is the most central of the downtown brew pubs, at 1415 First Avenue, near to the famous Pike Place Market. It is not the easiest place to find, as it is accessed via a small shopping arcade.
The pub manages to keep a cosier atmosphere by being divided into rooms, some of which are only opened when the customer numbers warrant the extra space. The walls are covered with beer memorabilia. The menu here also offers burgers and pizzas as well as a number of fish dishes in the restaurant part of the pub. The beer selection is wide and happy hour is 4-6 Monday – Friday. Tel: 206 622 6044.
Recommended beer: Monk’s Uncle – Tripel Ale.
It can be seen, therefore, that the real ale fan staying for a night or two in Seattle can find high quality beers and tasty food within walking distance of the main downtown area.
If you’re travelling to a new city and are in search of good beer, then the pubcrawler site is a useful guide.
